The City Growth Srategy covers the whole of the City of Plymouth, and provides an opportunity to encourage and facilitate new business growth for Plymouth, based on the city's competitive strengths and locational advantages.
City Growth Strategies represent a new approach to the regeneration of cities developed in the United States and now being implemented in England. City Growth Strategies aim to stimulate the regeneration of deprived urban areas by focusing on their economic strengths and competitive advantages, rather than their social weaknesses. They place a strong emphasis on business growth and wealth creation as the best means of tackling the social and economic problems of city areas, and seek to engage business closely in developing and implementing programmes of action.
Plymouth was selected as one of the seven City Growth Strategy pilot areas and has completed an extensive programme of research, on which the Strategy is based.
An important part of the process is the identification and development of business clusters - local concentrations of interconnected firms and institutions in related indusries - that gain competitive advantages from being located close together.
The role of PBG is to then work with representatives from each of the sectors and to form sector groups that are made up of representatives from the business community and public sector bodies including business support agencies, to identify barriers to growth and to put in place formal action plans.
